Grade 8 Course Description

Students will continue to master skills in four major areas: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and Study Skills.

Reading

  • Students will be required to read orally and will have their oral reading skills evaluated.
  • Students will read short stories, poems, and dramas in and outside of class.  Additionally, Students will be expected to read a number of novels outside of class.
  • Students will have to demonstrate mastery of most plot development concepts such as main character, turning point, etc.

Writing

  • Students will have to demonstrate mastery of the short answer form, including the ability to reference the question in their answers, write complete sentences, support opinions, and provide complete information based on what is asked of them in the question. Students will study and master a basic essay. Students will write an extensive narrative and technical manual.

Speaking
  • Students will orally present material from time to time.

Listening

  • Students will be evaluated on their ability to listen to the oral presentations and pick out fact from opinion as well as to reconstruct the speaker’ general outline.
  • Students will also be evaluated on their ability to listen to and interact with others during small/large group discussions. 

Study Skills

  • The SQ3R study method will be presented for use in Sibley East School District content area classes, i.e. those dependent on a factually based textbook.
