Learning Should Be a Life Goal

I remember back in college my professors on numerous occasions asked their students to write down their own Philosophy of Education. Even as a teacher of 14 years, I have been asked several times to write down my philosophy. Each time I write it, it changes, as it should.

We as educators should constantly be learning ourselves, learning new techniques, new approaches, new ways of dealing with the every changing population of students, and adjusting how we teach each year. That is a big part of my philosophy. Education has gone through some major changes in the last 20 years. Even in the past 5 years, we have seen theories and practices come and go- but the one thing that remains a constant is that children want to be taught, even if they don't always agree.

Learning a foreign language is just that- foreign. We are taught at a young age how to sound out words, grammar rules, spelling words, etc... Now you come into my class and I tell you to forget some of what you've been taught and learn it a new way. I understand that most of my students won't use their knowledge of Spanish once they leave my room; however, I hope they keep the experience of the language and cultures in mind. Language is a hands on learning- you must do to learn. You must speak it, write it, hear it, and read it. I cover each of these areas in my classes.

I know that not every student responds to the teachings and learning the same. I vary my structure of instruction constantly. Each day I have 5 or more different activities taking place to cover all of the learning styles present in my room.

The last thing I want to touch base on is getting to know the students. Students will achieve more and do better in classes where they feel the teacher has a general interest in their learning and lives. For this reason- I will greet students in the hall and when they enter my room.

My advise to parents and students: never quit being a learner.
