Welcome to the Varsity Knowledge Bowl home page.  I am Vikki Louwagie, the Varsity Knowledge Bowl advisor.  Sibley East has a history of fielding strong Knowledge Bowl teams.  It is always a pleasure to work with so many highly motivated students!  If I can be of any assistance with your Knowledge Bowl questions, please contact me at the email address below (preferred) or at 612-964-8231.

What is Knowledge Bowl?

Knowledge Bowl is academic competition where students compete as a team against other schools. Students compete in teams of 5 students for the written test and 4 students for the oral rounds.  Questions cover the curriculum that is taught  in grades 9-12.  Here is an excellent feature from Minnesota Public Radio: http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/features/200010/25_julinc_knowledgebowl-m/

Participation Opportunities

Students in grades 9-12 are invited to sign up. SE Competes in Minnesota’s South Central Region, which includes schools from Sibley County south to the Iowa Border. About 27 schools with a total of about 60 teams are expected to participate this year.

Students can participate on a team or as a box operator.

Calendar

Knowledge Bowl is active from December through April.

Practices are Thursday or Friday during the Wolverine den time (1:15 - 1:45 p.m.).  A season schedule will be distributed. If unable to attend practice, students should personally let coaches know prior to practice.

Sign-up

Students are notified of the sign-up period in mid-November via the announcements.

What kind of meets are there? How many meets will SE attend?

SE will participate in 4 invitational meets and the Sub-regional meet. Qualifying teams will advance to the Regional meet. The top five teams at Refions will advnce to the State competition at Cragun's Resort in Brainerd, MN.

Is there a fee to participate in Junior High Knowledge Bowl?

Yes, there is a $30.00 fee to participate in Knowledge Bowl. This helps to pay for our team registrations fees and transportation to meets.

When are meets held?

Meets are held during the school day, generally from 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Most meets are held on school days. Sometimes we leave very early in the morning, depending on where the meet is being held.

How many students are on a team?

Teams of five students compete in one written round and 4 oral rounds. The coach will determine who will be on the teams and team members may change from meet to meet. In addition, it is nice to have 1- 2 trained box operators.

What are the questions like?

Most questions are taken from the curriculum for grades 9-12. Some questions may deal with current events and/or general cultural knowledge. Quick recall and team work are required.

How many teams will SE have?

We plan to register two teams for each meet.

How are students chosen for meets?

We hope, but can’t guarantee, that everyone who has attended practices will go to a meet. Generally 12th graders have better opportunity because it is their last year in senior high Knowledge Bowl, and they have studied more of the material that is used for questions. SE students will be chosen to attend meets based on individual test score, team competition, ability to work with others, attendance at practices, grade eligibility, attitude……

How are students notified of their selection for meets?

Names of students selected to participate in a meet are generally posted 2 to 3 days before a meet. Student must see coaches to confirm their attendance and get the meet information and schedule. Failure to confirm may result in an alternate being named to take your place.

How should students dress for meets?

Follow the school dress code.  The use of caps/hats is not permitted during competition. If you have doubts, ask a coach.

NOTES: Knowledge bowl is an extracurricular activity. Students must be in good standing with academics
(nothing lower than a C-), attendance, and discipline. Participation in Knowledge Bowl is recorded on a student’s transcript.

Parent Volunteer Opportunities!!!

Sometimes parents are needed to volunteer to be judges at meets, or if Sibley East hosts a meet, parents may be needed to help with facilitating the meet.
